lba32 is the most magical incantation I know on linux. It's saved me probably
a half-dozen times, and I've never actually taken the time to figure out what
the heck it is. It helps if you have candles, a black cat and broomstick, and
a frog's liver handy when you add it to lilo.conf though. The computer doesn't
care, but it makes everything seem more mystical when the machine boots
perfectly.
