Hi Angie,

The working card is also a 3c905c. But I'm not using the standard
linux - athena there. Instead it's the debian potato distribution
and the drivers obtained from 3com web site... We had to recompile
the kernel(add a module) to make the network card work...

What is strange though is that  the linux - athena installer seems
to recognize the 3c905c (from the kernel messages on the installation
screen)... I get from the kernel the type of the card, the irq, 
the MAC address (these are matching with the information given on 
the Windows side, which is working correctly) and a message saying :
found suggestion of 3c59x
found 3c59x device 
going to insmod 3c59x.o (path is NULL)
