There was some discussion on -c sipb today about the
current problems with NFS and the installer. It
was debated for a bit whether or not it was possible
to use the kernel from the 7.0 installer with our
6.2 install. The question no one seemed to have the
answer to was whether or not the kernel in the 7.0
installer has the appropriate patches to fix the NFS
problem. Can anyone shed any additional light on this?
What is the specific NFS problem? (Besides "too flakey for production
use"?) We're using it for production use (home directories, et. al.)
at VA Linux, and haven't been having any problems.
I am not sure exactly which Red Hat kernels have the correct NFS
patches. I can point folks at a specific kernel that I know has the
latest patches, though:
ftp://ftp.valinux.com/pub/kernel/2.2.18-beta
There are 6.2 and 7.0 RPM's. It would be really useful if someone could
try out that particular kernel RPM, and let me know if they're still
seeing whatever NFS problems that they've been trying to deal with. If
they are seeing the problem, it would be nice to get more details about
exactly that the problem is, and I can feed it back to the NFS
developers.
One of the main Linux NFS developers, Dave Higgen, was hired by VA to
take care of all of the Linux NFS problems, and as far as I know, we
haven't seen any stability problems for quite some time. If there are
problems, we'd like to know about them.
