Here's some more detailed info about the NFS failure.

Also, I've had no problem connecting to the sipb-nfs server from this box
in the Debian distribution we usually run it off of (Debian 2.2), using
knfs-client.
It may be some kind of problem with the nfs client on the install disk,
maybe being unhappy with my hardware, although my suspicion would be the
timeout settings on the nfs server on the install disk.
For complete reference, its a slot A Athlon 750 with an EPOX-KX7A
motherboard (which includes the via chipset with ATA-66), 256MB pc133, 45
GB HD, two tulip ethernet cards, and a ncr53c8xx scsi controller we use
for a tape drive.
The installer first runs in to trouble after it retrieves the install
image (during which time it does insert the scsi driver module: maybe I'll
try removing the scsi card...uughh), with nfs complaining that the
sipb-nfs server is not respoding.
It then says the server is "OK", and proceeds to allow me to go as far as
configuring my mouse. After this stage, it agian complains that the nfs
server is not responding.
It reports that "task XXXX is not able to obtain nfs slot" (or something
close). Moving to the shell console and hitting enter also hangs, and
produces new message that "task XXXX+1 is not able to obtain slot".
Thanks,
Gary.
