I did this a few months ago, and the libdes.a that is included with the
Kerberos package works fine for me.

On a (sort of) related note, I will soon be releasing (hopefully) a package
containing source for the Hesiod library, Kerberos client programs, and
Zephyr client/host manager programs.  This would be useful for anyone
running a Linux machine connected to a MIT Athena-like system.
