after a discussion in the office, Karl asked me to drop a note here,
since this will affect the install stuff people are working on.

1) currently updating an i586 or lower (as opposed to i686) machine
through a patch release that includes a kernel update will fail
gracefully. There is a fix for this that is expected to come out in
8.4.11.

2) currently updating a machien with a scsi root disk through a patch
release that includes a kernel update will fail catastrophically
(resulting in a non-bootable machine). I've started to think about
fixing this. Hopefully, I'll have some patches soon.

Note that even if I have patches and they make it into 8.4.11, that
isn't going to come out before students are likely to start installing
machines, which means we'll need to get them to take 8.4.11 before
they take other patch releases, or they are likely to lose. (ie.
AUTOUPDATE=false users who don't take updates are likely to get hurt).
