so, I spent several hours trying to install linux onto a 486 I had, It
didn't work. here's what happened:

I made boot disks using the 5.2 images in the linux locker. the
machine failed to boot. (it dies loading the kernel) after trying
several floppies, and having it die in the same place, I looked for a
new image. I snarfed redhat's 5.2 images off a mirror. they booted it
fine.

then came the install. when I tried a 5.2 install from sipb-nfs it
complained about not being able to find all the files it needed. (a
different error than what I'd have gotten if the path was wrong) so I
stuck with trying a 5.1 install. the 5.1 install printed errors about
"unable to open /usr/lib/rpmrc" to the top of the screen, but went a
long smoothly until it was time to actually install the rpms. then it
dies with "fatal error opening rpm database" I didn't see anything
interesting in any of the VT. I did poke around the shell a bit, and
noticed that it was expecting /usr/lib/rpmrc, but that it appeared to
be /usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc I tried linking the 2, but still got fatal
errors.

I'm planning on trying a bit more tonight, perhaps with different
disk, and I'll be trying harder to get the 5.2 stuff off sipb-nfs. any
suggestions as to what this problem is, and how to fix it?

seph
