Hi Tom,
I was told by an RCC friend that you may be the person to approach in my
suggestion. I graduated in the spring of '95, and now work in Westboro at
Applix, Inc., which, among other things, produces Applixware, a
multi-platform office application suite for UNIX and WinNT. This summer,
Applix came out with a Linux port of Applixware 4.2, distributed through
RedHat Software.
So here comes the shameless plug part (You can tell I'm R&D, not marketing
=b). Applix would like to find out if the MIT community would be
interested in evaluating and using Applixware; first for the growing Linux
community, and then, given our multi-platform strength, even campus-wide.
Especially given the lack of a commercial-quality WYSIWYG word processor
application (although Applixware also contains quality spreadsheet,
database client, graphics, presentation, and e-mail tools) for the Linux
community at MIT, it seems like this would be a cool idea. :)
I've been asked to find out if y'all would be interested in evaluating
Applixware 4.2 for Linux. I can give a few strategic, interested, parties
a couple copies on CD (not crippled -- full version), to evaluate, in the
hopes that after you find it a quality product, IS would consider
purchasing Applixware for the Linux community at MIT, and perhaps even for
the larger Athena community.
Please let me know if there are others, of course, whom I should contact.
You can e-mail me at my MIT e-mail address. If you have specific questions
regarding the product or the Linux port, you can check out our homepage at
www.applix.com, or e-mail sanjay@applix.com.
Thanks,
Eric
