There are now some concrete dates for MSWS '94. For MIT folks interested
in seeing the proceedings for MSWS '93, I just sent one of my spare copies
to the MIT Libraries Gift Office, so hopefully it'll appear on the shelves
sometime in the next few weeks. Enjoy!

Call For Papers

Third Annual Maple Summer Workshop and Symposium (MSWS'94)
MEETING OF THE MAPLE MINDS

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Troy, NY
August 9-13, 1994

The Maple Summer Workshop and Symposium is an annual forum for Maple
enthusiasts from all fields worldwide to exchange experiences and ideas on
the application of the Maple family of products. MSWS'94 will consist of two
major components: short courses and an applications symposium. The courses
will run from August 9-10 and the applications symposium will be held August
11-13.
- --------------------------------------------
The course portion of the conference has been designed to accommodate a wide
range of interests and disciplines. Participants can choose two of six,
one-day course modules:

Discovering Maple V
Mathematical Problem-solving with Maple V
Maple V Programming Fundamentals
Advanced Programming with Maple V
Maple V in the Classroom
Algorithms for Computer Algebra
- --------------------------------------------
The Applications Symposium will contain invited talks from leading
personalities, panel discussions, workshops, open forums, and paper
presentations from researchers, educators, and other innovative users from
all fields.

We invite all members of the Maple community to submit a full paper of 4000
words or less describing original applications of Maple. Users from all
fields are encouraged to participate. We especially encourage papers from
the following areas:

- - engineering and applied sciences (all disciplines)
- - physical sciences (physics, chemistry, etc.)
- - biological sciences (biology, medicine, environment, etc.)
- - social sciences (economics, psychology, etc.)
- - pure and applied mathematics
- - computer science
- - education (all levels)
- - Maple in industry and business

Acceptance will be based on this full paper. All accepted papers will be
published in a proceedings that will be distributed at MSWS'94. Authors of
accepted papers are expected to deliver a 20 minute presentation at the
conference. The presenter of the paper is also expected to be a registered
participant of MSWS'94.

 Contents of Papers

All papers should attempt to address the question RHow has Maple changed the
way in which problems are solved in my field?S, or RHow has Maple changed
the way I function within my discipline?S At one extreme the paper could
present a novel or innovative Maple-influenced solution to a particular
problem in your area. At the other extreme, the paper could address the
question from a broader, more philosophical perspective. We welcome both
kinds of papers, as well as those that have elements of each portion of the
spectrum.

Important Dates

March 16 - 3 copies of full paper (4000 words max.) due
April 25 - authors notified of acceptance
June 3 - final camera-ready copies due

Incentives for Authors

- - One author from all accepted papers will receive a 25% discount on
registration fees for MSWS'94
- - The names of all authors of submitted papers will be entered into a draw
for the following prizes:

- - first prize: a licensed copy of Maple V for DOS/Windows, Macintosh or
NeXT; a complete Maple reference set, and a Maple gift pack
- - second prize: a complete Maple reference set and a Maple gift pack
- - third prize: a Maple gift pack

The winners will be drawn on May 1, 1994, and will be notified immediately.

Guidelines for Papers

Papers should be no longer than 4000 words in length and should be typed or
word-processed.

Appropriate references and citations (following standard academic citation
practice; referenced either by author's name or by a reference number)
should be included in the paper. Avoid using footnotes as this may cause
problems in layout.

If possible, authors should include short, illustrative Maple examples that
clearly demonstrate how Maple has assisted the problem-solving process.
Authors should refrain from including complete source code of lengthy Maple
programs. If you feel that the program would be of general interest to
users, we may be able to include it in the Maple Share Library.

All authors will be required to submit 3 hard copies of the paper. Authors
may submit papers by e-mail but not by fax.

Authors will be required to lay out final camera-ready papers. Appropriate
layout sheets and instructions will be provided upon final acceptance of the
full paper.
