That is right, there aren't any firewalls (that I know of) separating MIT 
from the rest of the Internet.  Firewalls generally get installed when 
people become concerned about corporate security.

POP servers are just places for holding incoming e-mail, till the recipient 
can pick it up, much like a box at the U. S. Post Office.
