Has the cache problem already been solved?

Hello everyone,

There seems to be a major concern amongst many students that the
caching problem has basically "already been solved" by the computing
community.

First of all, just because there are already some solutions to the
problem in general, does this mean that there is no chance for you to
be innovative and come up with improved ways of solving the problem?
Certainly not. Just because a problem already has a "solution" does
not mean that it has been solved well, or that the current solutions
can not be improved on.

Second of all, remember that what the project asks you to do is
propose a design of something that introduces a cache that will reduce
web traffic between MIT and NEARNET. So feel free to base your design
on one of the other cache projects (in which case you should
acknowledge this), but you still need to give a full specification for
the design of something to be installed at MIT specifically. Probably
the best design projects will include aspects of other cache projects
(like the ones pointed to by the 6.033 Design Project web page) along
with other innovative design techniques devised by yourself.
