Subject: Obtain an MIT Personal Certificate with Internet Explorer on Windows

--------
Good Afternoon,

We are pleased to announce that acquiring and using personal certificates
with Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 on Windows is now
supported. This effort was in response to requests from the MIT community
to make using certificate protected sites possible from IE.

Currently, the ability to obtain personal certificates is limited to the
Windows platform. This is because Microsoft has not added personal
certificate support for IE on the Macintosh, and the required version (IE
5.5 with SP 2) in not available for UNIX. For these reasons, we continue
to recommend Netscape as the preferred browser for use with personal
certificates.

Known Issue
-----------------------------------------------------
One SAPweb requisition, specific to the Department of Facilities, does not
work with IE. All other SAPweb and ECAT partner requisitions worked fine
in testing.

Details
-----------------------------------------------------
Certificate acquisition is enabled for IE version 5.5 and higher. We
strongly recommend that you upgrade to IE 5.5 SP2 to fix a number of
security holes in earlier implementations of IE. We do not recommend IE 6
at this time, though you can acquire and use MIT personal certificates with
it. Certificate acquisition has been enabled for several weeks now as we
have been finalizing our testing effort.
