I've had this annoying experience on Win98 as well.
I just browsed around in my RealPlayer and disabled the StartCenter option.
I believe this is the source of the problem, since whenever RP has hung my
machine, it seems to be running out of the system tray. Turning off
StartCenter disables this behavior.
Can't promise this is the solution, but it looks promising.
