FYI, the following is a note from the most recent SANS NT security digest
and applies to a Y2K issue with Veritas/Seagate Backup Exec 6.11, used by
some folks around here. I believe this product was also the basis for the
original NT backup utility included by Microsoft, though I don't know if
the same issue applies in that case.
Also included is useful tip for the penny-pinching security-minded
subscribers to this list (i.e. most of us...), along with the appropriate
credits.

4.3 Veritas Backup Exec 6.11 Y2K issue
There is a minor Y2K problem in Veritas (Seagate) Backup Exec version
6.11. The problem, which manifests itself only if the NT Server running
the backup software is set to use two-digit years, involves jobs submitted
this year to run in the year 2000. Backup Exec interprets the start date
by looking at the current date, and thinks the job should run in the
year 1900. Therefore, since it is past due, it is immediately started.
The workaround is to have NT display years in four digits, instead of
two. Alternatively, you can purchase an upgrade to Backup Exec 7.3,
which does not exhibit the problem.

5. Tip of the month: Get free change detection software
Pedestal Software has created a change detection program called Intact.
This program is designed to monitor your system and alert you when
certain changes are made to the configuration. The base version of this
software, Intact Open Use, is free, and available at
http://www.pedestalsoftware.com. It can be used as a basic intrusion
detection package on stand-alone systems. There are also more advanced
versions of this software available, including the full Intact, which
includes an intelligence feature to monitor your system for a period of
time and suggest items to monitor.
