David: For what it's worth as a partial answer to your question, we have
an NT server configured as a backup server using DLT tape. It does
unattended nightly backups of the domain file servers and also of the
domain workstations (NT, also some Win95 and Mac) using Seagate (nee
Arcada) Backup Exec. It's been pretty painless and also pretty reliable,
as long as users leave their machines turned on. The software makes it
easy to restore everything from full disks down to individual files, though
it doesn't offer full image backup for disaster recovery.
