Hello,
We are trying to set policy at the Lab for Nuclear Science for what we
support now and what we are going to support in the future for Windows.
Currently we are providing lab-wide printer service for Windows 95 and
Windows NT, and for that purpose we have a small but growing database of
domain users. We are going to be experimenting with backups, and we
expect we will be supporting that, lab-wide, within a time frame of
months. We are also providing full support for a number of Windows NT
Workstations which are being used by administrative users.
I know that MIT supports Win95 and Winnt, including backups through ADSM,
and print services through LPRSpooler. But there are arguments that can
be made for local support. In particular, users would appreciate having
their machines automatically backed up by someone no matter how simple and
easy ADSM is to set up and maintain.
I'd like to get a better idea of what the different departments and labs
at MIT are doing in terms of local Windows support.
Would you be willing to send me an email outlining what you support in
your group, and what you intend to support in the future? I would be glad
to summarize this information and mail it back to 'ntpartners' so that we
could all see it... let me know if some of the information you send me
shouldn't be for general consumption!
Sincerely,
David Woodruff
