status of that if any?

The following article will appear in the next IS Newsletter.

Windows NT Workstation 4 License Now Available on CD
Mary Ellen Bushnell
In a continuing effort to encourage members of the MIT community to run
Windows NT on their PCs, IS is making the license for Windows NT
Workstation 4 available on CD. The primary audiences are those migrating
from Windows 3.x and those running NT Workstation 4 who need Service Pack 3
and subsequent hotfixes.
Migrating from Windows 95 or 98 is not straightforward. If your computer is
running one of these operating systems, see Microsoft's general migration
guidelines at
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/deployment/migrationkit/migratew95.asp
If you are planning to get a new PC, you are encouraged to buy it with
Windows NT already installed.
License Agreement with Microsoft
Several months ago MIT made a large volume purchase of Windows NT
Workstation licenses comprising 2500 licenses for Windows NT 4 and 2500
Upgrade Advantage licenses. The agreement includes maintenance and upgrades
until January 28, 2000. These licenses can be used for Institute purposes
on MIT-owned machines, or for academic/personal purposes by MIT students on
student-owned machines. The CD provides an easy way to distribute the
licenses to authorized users.
What's on the CD
The CD contains the same version of NT Workstation 4 that comes on a new
machine and on the Microsoft CD packaged with it. In addition, IS has
included Service Pack 3 and all the hotfixes since its release. Only seven
of the hotfixes have been selected to be part of the standard installation.
They are listed in the box below.
What's Not Included
Although Service Pack 4 has been released, IS does not yet support it. When
it is deemed reliable in the MIT environment, IS will prepare another CD,
replacing SP3 and the hotfixes with Service Pack 4.
How to Get the CD
The terms of the agreement are very strict and for that reason distribution
is being closely tracked. To receive a license, register online at
http://web.mit.edu/is/products/vsls/mitnt/
Choose the Institute or Student link, as appropriate, and read the license
agreement. The restrictions are extensive and explicit.
Then proceed to the registration form, which you should fill out completely
and submit. Employees will receive an e-mail confirmation notice and a CD
will be sent by campus mail. Students will receive an e-mail con-firmation,
but are required to sign a Student End User License Agreement and pick up a
CD in person in N42.
If you don't have Web access, call x8-9519 to set up an appointment to
register for the CD.
Using the CD
Before proceeding with the install, you should back up your hard drive.
When you insert the CD, a splash screen displays. Click on Windows NT Setup
and follow the on-screen instructions. You do not have to reinstall the
operating system if all you need are Service Pack 3 and the hotfixes.
Instructions for installing them are in the jewel case documentation and on
the Web at
