You do have to choose at the outset whether to be a domain controller.
That will apparently change in NT 5 but that's a long way off.
I am reasonably certain that you can become a domain controller as an
"upgrade" of your existing NT installation. I'd carefully read each of
those blue screens as they come up -- I think the domain controller
question comes before upgrade or replace question.
The 95-to-NT problem is one of incompatible registry formats (microsoft's
win95 left-hand not knowing about the winNT right-hand... that aspect of
the company is being fixed as part of NT 5). Going from NT to NT is
entirely less trouble all around. In self-defense, you may want to export
parts of your registry, to able to reload entries afterward if necessary.
