Subject: iPass Release Effort Underway

Last spring a Discovery Team was formed to find an easy, inexpensive
way for the MIT Community to get network access while traveling. The
team recommended that MIT purchase remote access from iPass,
http://www.ipass.com/. iPass is a pay-as-you-go service that offers
local dialup numbers throughout the world, at reasonable rates.

The iPassConnect client is a simple, easy to use desktop client that
allows remote users to connect to the internet through iPass' global
network of providers. It has a point-and-click interface for
connecting to iPass local access points, and supports Microsoft
Windows XP SP1, Windows 2000 SP3, and Mac OS 10.2.

The Remote Access Delivery Team has begun the effort to deliver iPass
to the MIT community. This release effort will focus on creating
documentation, testing and gearing up support for the iPassConnect
clients. The Delivery Team is also working on implementing the
backend server needed to authorize use of iPass and the billing
system which will be built into TNS Billing in order to bill back
charges to the MIT Community. The Remote Access Delivery Team
anticipates releasing the client and opening up registration for its
use in June 2003.

To learn more about iPass, see http://www.ipass.com/

We will send updates periodically throughout the process. For more
information on iPass and the release effort, see
http://web.mit.edu/is/delivery/remote/ . If you have questions or
suggestions, please contact the team via e-mail at
ipass-release@mit.edu.
