on occasion the wsj sort of wanders into this domain :)
there it is, on page b1, of today's, mon 8 may, wall street journal,
the _health journal_ column, by marilyn chase:
_food specialists seek just the right recipe for cancer-smart diet_.
(some excerpts follow)
"it turns out the timeworn advice to eat your fruits and
vegetables may have been better counsel than anyone knew.
besides vitamins, such foods contain hundreds of compounds
that may help prevent cancer. ...
"`what we know in 1995 is that diet may play a role in 35% of
cancer deaths," says charles hennekens, professor of medicine
at harvard university.
"for years people have tried a simple redemptive strategy -
like a big mac with a beta carotene chaser. it isn't that easy."
(report on national cancer institute budget of $40 million
for 60 studies on low-fat, high-fibre diets, array of
vitamins, minerals, and `newer compounds like egcg*, an
ingredient in green tea that may prevent cancer,' followed
by reference to center for science in the public interest
list of suggested basic strategy (q.v.)).
(paragraph with philip taylor of the nci quoted)
"bruce ames of u of c at berkeley [many readers in toxicology
of the 80's will easily recall ames' work] says, h
believes too little folic acid from leafy green vegetables
can allow breaks in chromosomes, leading to cancer. not
eating fruits and vegetables, he says, is `like stepping in
front of an x-ray machine.'"
[i assume the reference to `egcg' means research in japan
on "tea catechins" as anti-oxidants, etc. perhaps someone
following this or working in this area can say more. and
or say something about a kind of asthma brought on by
ingestion of green tea in some folks. - r]
