Minutes from the VSG meeting at the Liberty Coffeehouse, Central Square,
Tuesday, April 18
1) We discussed the upcoming VSG elections. Since VSG has been growing, we
talked about adding new offices to take the burden off of some people and
make things go more efficiently. The ones which we decided on are:
President (Chairman?) - will oversee all aspects of VSG, and work with the
other officers to help them carry out their duties
Vice-president - help the president in carrying out her/his duties
Treasurer - keep track of VSG finances; submit budget proposals to
FinBoard; help plan fundraisers?
Secretary - take minutes; keep track of VSG correspondence; take care of
room reservations for VSG, when neither the president or vice-pres are
able to; attend ASA meetings?
List Maintainer - takes care of listmaint for all VSG lists, periodically
updates the Web page
Social Chair - heads a committee to plan dining events and other fun VSG
activities
Publicity Chair - heads a committee to plan publicity for VSG events; plans
the VSG Activities Midway event
Recipe Maintainer - keeps the vsg-recipe list active by searching out good
vegetarian recipes and encourages participation by soliciting recipes and
recipe requests
We will vote on some amendments to the constitution to allow for the new
offices at the next meeting, which will be THIS FRIDAY, APRIL 28 at 5 p.m.
(location TBA). We will also elect officers, so if you'd like to run for an
office, this is the meeting to make! Even if you haven't been able to make
any VSG activity yet, but you'd like to get involved, this is the way to do
it!
2) Suggested activities for VSG:
-MOTHER'S DAY CAMPAIGN AGAINST VEAL - this is a national effort
coordinated by FARM (the Meatout folks). As most of you know, veal comes
from baby calves which are taken from their mothers shortly after birth and
chained at the neck in tiny crates such that they are not able to turn
around or lay comfortably. They are force-fed a liquid diet which is
deficient in iron and fiber which causes them to suffer from acute diarrhea
and respiratory disorders, and consequently they are fed an abundance of
antibiotics (to improve their chance of survival for 16 weeks). Even so,
10-20 percent die before they can be butchered. But the flesh of those
that "survive", as a result, is the desired whitish color. Of course,
eating veal and other animal products has been linked to those dietary
diseases we all know of -- heart disease, stroke, cancer, and the list goes
on.
We are still in the process of planning this, but we will most
likely have a booth or two during the week before Mother's Day, May 8-12.
(Mother's Day is on the 14th this year, if you want to get a head-start on
your card buying.) If you have any thoughts on this, please email them to
me.
-Visit to Vegetarian Resource Center. I have recently been in touch
with Maynard Clark of the VRC and they apparently have a lot of great
materials, including articles that go back a number of years which have
anything and everything to do with vegetarianism. We don't have a specific
proposed date on this one yet; might be better to hold off until summer.
-End of year VSG party. We'll probably discuss this one more at
meetings to come.
-As an idea for next year, the idea came up that we could have
regular booths to dispel various health myths, such as "vegetarians
don't/can't get enough (of the right kind of) protein" and "milk is really
good for you" and "your body needs dietary cholesterol".
3) NEW LISTS. There is a new list, vsg-action, for people interested in
being active in VSG and outreach. Also, the list vsg-announce has been
altered -- it is now vsg-local, to emphasize that it is a local list.
Hopefully this will cut down on non-MIT people desubbing. Please feel free
to add yourself to either of these lists by using either "mailmaint" or
"blanche -a <username> <listname>".
4) We will be submitting a budget proposal to ASA FinBoard this Friday,
April 28. If you have any good suggestions as to something creative we
could put on the proposal to get more money, please email.
5) As a point of information, I have been appointed as a member on the
committee to examine MIT Food Services. If you have any suggestions or
would like me to make an especial point, please email.
6) SETA -- We agreed to simply try to keep the list active in hopes that
someone motivated will come forth to take charge of this group. We may hold
SETA elections next week at the VSG meeting. In fact, in order to be
re-recognized by ASA, the group needs to have a president and treasurer at
the minimum, I believe. Would anyone like to be a "paper-president", just
so that SETA can be re-recognized? If so, email me.
That's all! Remember, the next meeting is this coming Friday, April 28, at
5 p.m.
