Subject: Re: bible and slaughter
Dear Listers,
Biblical text can and usually is selected to support people's
beliefs. The main difficulty is that there are many contradictions
between the Old and New Testaments. The most notable contradiction
being "an eye for an eye" vs "turn the other cheek". The early
Christian movement certainly held the latter to be more valid than
the former. If we look, for example, at the monks of Mt Athos in
Greece we see an untainted tradition that has been maintained for
nearly 2000 years. These monks to the best of my knowledge are vegan
like their predecessors. Presumably their attitude towards animals is
justified through belief in a compassionate God. On the other hand
many people proclaiming to be Christians will say that some verse in
the Bible is the main reason why they think it's OK to eat meat. So
which Christians are we going to believe?
