This is true. No plants do not produce cholesterol. They have a similar
substance called ergosterol which has essentially no effect in animals.
Both cholesterol and ergosterol form vital parts of cell membranes.

If I remember correctly from biology classes, one way that cholesterol
can be manufactored is from vitamin D.
