Two differences come to mind:
1)Psychologically, we can more easily feel/understand the pain an animal
feels while it is being killed.
2)We do not need to kill animals for food in order to survive. However,
it is generally accepted that we need to eat plants to live. So killing
an animal seems more like a "death with no meaning".
