Don't forget that the underlying reason for rainforest clearance is
economic pressure. Western banks own an enormous amount of
third-world debt. As long as this remains the case, countries such
as Brazil will have no choice but to carry on propping up Western
meat-eaters. This is a product of capitalism. Also, I heard once
that at the height of the Ethiopian famine in the mid-80s, the
Ethiopians were exporting food to Europe and North America. This is
the case in many other countries. Usually the products are coffee,
oranges, sugar, etc.
Just thought I'd add something to the discussion.
