I certainly don't agree that rights can only come with the ability to
reason. Human infants don't seem to be any more intelligent than many
non-human animals, but I don't think many people would support the
idea of a "baby farm". "It's not whether they can reason, it's whether
they can suffer." I support animals' rights not because they are cute
and everything, but because I don't want them to suffer. This remind
me of a very stimulating discussion I had with a friend. We were
talking about reports that certain plants seem to have feelings and
emotions, and we were saying maybe we should just eat fruits and seeds
if that was true. I really don't see what's the big deal of being a
vegetarian. It's our own choice afterall. Nobody seems to need to
defend his/her choice of not eating dogs. I don't see why we should
apologize for choosing not to eat dogs or chickens or any other animals.
