Hello everyone! The MIT Vegetarian Group had a meeting yesterday. Five
people were present (myself, Laura, Stephanie, Ike, and Parthiv), and
here's what we discussed:
1. Elections
In an effort to get the group more organized and active, we addressed
the issue of officers at the meeting. Laura wanted to pass leadership to
someone else, so we discussed the different positions and responsibilities
involved. Here are the results of the vote:
President: Roseanna Chickos
Vice President: Stephanie Cross
Secretary/Webmaster: Isaac Feitler
Treasurer: Parthiv Shah
Officers alone cannot keep this group alive. We need and want
everyone's help for new ideas and planning/carrying out events.
2. Poster Space
The group was assigned poster space in building 8. Laura will put up
a preliminary poster to meet the deadline this weekend, and a more
permanent version will be put up in the near future. Here are our ideas
for that poster:
-list of common reasons for being vegetarian (animal rights/welfare,
health, world hunger, environment) with a brief description and picture for
each
-two areas to be changed regularly (monthly maybe?); the content of
these areas could be voted on, and ideas include famous vegetarians, health
facts, and interesting news articles.
-pocket(s) for pamphlets
3. Event Ideas
Laura said that when this group was active there were 2-3 events per
semester. For some events we could try coordinating with other relevant
groups on campus or in the local area. Here are some of the ideas we threw
around:
-speakers (since this involves so much planning, we probably can't do
this until fall semester)
-outreach events like a lobby 10 booth, ideally with free
food/literature, or even a bake sale
-potluck dinners, like the one for Thanksgiving, although not
necessarily only for holidays
-Stephanie brought up a very interesting idea for an entertaining
staged chef competition; we could try to coordinate it with some type of
holiday (Thanksgiving, Meatout)
-movies of vegetarian interest
-possibly bring back the IAP cooking series
4. Future Meetings
We will be deciding on a time and place for regular meetings. I
think a good goal would be two regular meetings and one dinner meeting per
month. If we find we need more time to accomplish our goals, we can change
our meeting schedule accordingly. More details on this soon.
5. Mailing List
The official mailing list for the MIT Vegetarian Group is
veg@mit.edu, not vsg@mit.edu. There are discrepancies between the two
lists, and soon we will be fixing that so that everyone on both lists will
receive the veg emails. However, we are trying to phase out the vsg lists,
so please send all email to the veg list. If you need to contact the
officers, the email is veg-officers@mit.edu.
I'm really looking forward to working with our new officers, and I'd like
to thank Laura for all her hard work and dedication to the group. I would
really like to see this group grow and flourish. If you have any comments,
suggestions, or questions, feel free to email me personally
(rchickos@mit.edu). I'll be sending another email out when we have the
next meeting planned.
I hope to see some more of you in the future!
Thanks,
Roseanna
