The way I see it, you are inadvertently going to consume some small
amount of animal product from time to time because we live in a
meat-centered culture. Flapjacks at the local waffle house are more
than likely to be cooked on the same grill as the sausages; vegetarian
subs at sandwich shops are cut with the same utensils as meat
sandwiches; and so forth. It doesn't seem worth agonizing about to me.
However, I do pay attention (very much so) to ingredients, and perhaps
naively, I trust the labeling that it will include meat products if
there are any. I knew about the Jiffy muffins. Also, up until about a
year and a half ago Oreos contained lard; so do most pie crusts
currently (anybody know of a lard-free brand off hand?) One caution:
meat products can sometimes be disguised. The "natural flavors"
ingredient is a kind of catch-all phrase. If you think it's
meat-flavored and it lists "natural flavors" as an ingredient, it
probably is genuinely meat-flavored.
And just if you're wondering where I pulled out all these random
facts, I had a subscription to Vegetarian Times for about two years.
Great magazine. Can't afford to renew. :)
