Two simple solutions:
1) Don't use MH... or at least not MH-rmail
2) ... oh well, I guess you didn't go for that...
Have a private copy of mh-e.el that has the three "(unlock-buffer)"
statements removed.
I am contemplating the setting up of another directory in testers with
kludges to get around the problems with new AFS clients interacting with
old AFS servers. For instance, I have a version of "zmailnotify" that
works (it is a lot like Jay's except that it doesn't make some of the
incorrect assumptions that Jay's does -- his references the real
zmailnotify program through a path that is not guaranteed to work), and
a copy of mh-e.el could also be placed there, etc.
