Followup:  things don't fail if I dial up to my PMAX, then rlogin to the
PVAX.  They screw up less often if I use the most recent (bsd-network)
telnetd and telnet client.

Even in telnet BINARY mode, things still fail (I had partially suspected
that it was the CR/NUL mapping at fault, but apparently not).

Some judicious use of script might shed some light here; it is too
convoluted to try via dialup.  Maybe if I can find a dialout modem to
try things at E40?
