This sounds like some Bourne shell code got executed under tcsh.
You can look in /usr/lib/init/xsession.tcsh to see where execution under
tcsh begins for tcsh users logging in on Athena 10. If you don't have
a .startup.X, I'm not sure where any Bourne shell code would be creeping
in.
