galaga appears to have the same problem:

abulia> athinfo galaga date ; sleep 10 ; athinfo galaga date
Tue Aug 15 22:17:31 EDT 2006
Tue Aug 15 22:17:32 EDT 2006
abulia> hostinfo galaga
Desired host: galaga
Official name: galaga.MIT.EDU
Host address: 18.18.3.9
Host info: "IBM/THINKCENTRE-S50"/"LINUX"
abulia> athinfo galaga version | tail -1
Athena Workstation (linux) Version 9.4.29 Tue Aug 15 01:25:16 EDT 2006

As far as I can tell (assuming host info is up to date), that
means all 3 S50 machines that respond and are running
9.4.29 seem to have a problem. So until we can demonstrate
that the cause of the problem lies elsewhere, I think the new
kernel must remain under suspicion.

I am going to reboot anhedonia now with the older kernel
again...
