I restarted the update. It picked up again at evolution-data-server,
suggesting that the previous update.log was complete, and finished
installing all of the package, but freaked out again while removing old
packages. This time I thought to get dmesg output, which I've included
below. It looks like the hard drive is throwing errors in the ext3
journal region, and I need to get the machine or its disk replaced.
