9.4.24 possible update lossage

This is just for the sake of archiving. While testing the 9.4.24
update on men-at-arms on Friday, there was some kind of system
freakout with the root filesystem. What I saw was a large number of
errors from rpmlib about failed writes, because the relevant
filesystem was mounted read-only; when I aborted the update,
/var/athena/update.log was apparently full of 0 bytes and I couldn't
write any files. When I rebooted, the machine came up as far as
pinging but wasn't answering any ports.
Today I had physical access to the machine, and found that it was
waiting for a manual fsck. There were many filesystem inconsistencies
to fix, but the machine appeared to come up okay after that.
/var/athena/update.log now contains some useful information, which
I've included below. I suspect it's incomplete, though.
I doubt this problem was due to the update itself; it's probably
either a hardware problem or coincidental ext3/kernel lossage.
