Background: Remotely I noticed I was logged in to character.mit.edu
(running Athena Linux 9.4.10) as root on tty1, so I decided to log root
out using the power of kill. Well, the tty root login appeared in the ps
table as two processes:
/usr/athena/etc/login.krb5 -- root
-bash
I became root using ksu. I killed the PID of login.krb5, then tried to
kill the PID of bash, but it was already gone (so presumably the first
kill succeeded). w and who revealed root was not logged in, so I exited
from ksu. Immediately, character became unresponsive.
It turns out that the cause was a kernel oops. This, however, doesn't look
like the previous AFS-related kernel oopses. Additionally, this oops
resulted in a kernel panic. The important part of /var/log/messages:
