When I run "more *Log" in /usr/afs/logs on the console of prometheus,
the banner for VolserLog is followed by one of those ugly little boxes
that usually indicates a non-printing character.  Running it through
"cat -v" shows it to be M-^? -- \377, a -1 byte.
