Hi,
Twice in the past week, Firefox has given me the error that
it "Could not initialize the browser's security component",
following which I cannot access HTTPS protected web sites:
("You cannot connect to nic.mit.edu because SSL is disabled.")
If I check my Preferences / Options, SSL is still enabled there.
Toggling SSL off/on does not repair the browser security component.
I've been using Mozilla for years, and for months on this
particular machine, and have never experienced this error before.
Today's bug with firefox makes the second occurrance within a few
days. I do always exit Mozilla/Firefox when I am done with it;
this most recent bug happened after I had already run Firefox
successfully a number of times today.
I was able to fix the problem by restoring yesterday's cert8.db
file from OldFiles to my ~/.mozilla/firefox/<profile>/ directory.
(Actually, I copied key3.db first, but that didn't fix the issue,
so I tried cert8.db next, and that fixed it.)
I don't know what's going on, but I'm not aware of any change of
behavior on my part that might have triggered this change in
firefox's response. Unfortunately, I didn't save a copy of the
key3.db or cert8.db files. I'm writing this up and sending it
in, in case other people see similar behavior.
