I don't know if this was just bad timing for when I chose to log in, or
if it is a real problem in the AFS code.
I updated from 6.4 to 7.0 before logging in. I was running a 6.4+
kernel (with AFS 3.0B2 code) before updating.
This appeared in my console window after a *very* pregnant pause after I
typed my password and the greet window was unmapped:
08:57 afs: Lost contact with file server 18.80.0.2 in cell athena.mit.edu
08:57 afs: Lost contact with file server 18.80.0.2 in cell athena.mit.edu

08:57 afs: Lost contact with volume server 18.80.0.2 in cell athena.mit.edu
A bit later this appeared by itself:
09:00 afs: file server 18.72.0.43 in cell athena.mit.edu is back up
09:00 afs: volume server 18.72.0.43 in cell athena.mit.edu is back up
A 'fs checks' says:
These servers are still down: MAEANDER.MIT.EDU.
but a ping shows it is at least running IP:
[{1}lycus:~]
% ping -v maeander
