ah, I forgot that I could check update.log. I've put a copy in
/mit/kchen/Public/update.log.

It looks like the SCSI problem I reported and this problem are related.

+ kernel                    ###########################################No
module advansys found for kernel 2.4.21-15.EL, aborting.
mkinitrd failed
 [ 56%]

and later, near the end:

+ gnome-system-monitor
###########################################grubby fatal error: unable to
find a suitable template
 [100%]

While I don't have a copy of my original grub.conf, it should be pretty
similar to my current one (now that I fixed it):

# grub.conf created by Linux Athena installer
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,5)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (2.4.21-15.EL)
        root   (hd0,5)
        kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.21-15.EL ro root=/dev/hda9
        initrd /initrd-2.4.21-15.EL.img
title Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (2.4.21-15.EL) (single user mode)
        root   (hd0,5)
        kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.21-15.EL ro root=/dev/hda9 single
        initrd /initrd-2.4.21-15.EL.img
title Windows XP
        rootnoverify (hd0,0)
        chainloader +1
