xterm scrollbar use considered hazardous

on an rtpc, 6.4R, my xterm is unable to
recover from the operation of adding a
scrollbar (via the ctrl+middle menu).
in particular, the scrollbar comes up
occluding the left column of characters.
this is thought to be a known bug.
secondly, when i remove the scrollbar,
the last (bottom) line of the xterm
window is now off screen. i do not mean
that the margin of the xterm window has
moved, just that the sense of how many
lines are there in the display is one
too many. in consequence, i can no longer
see the line in which i am typing. this
is also true for editor usages of the
window.
