I think this is pretty broken, but apparently it's a long-standing
problem.  http://www.greenwoodsoftware.com/less/#profileout describes
the issue.

I think 9.2 Linux machines are more likely to display the issue because
Red Hat 9's /etc/profile.d/less.csh sets up a LESSOPEN environment
variable.  That has some vaguely neat benefits (you can "less" various
kinds of special files and get useful information about them), but it
also causes the .cshrc output problem to be more visible.
