Okay, after much hacking, I think I have implemented option 3: install
the Linux font set on Solaris and point fontconfig there.
In the process of testing, I also noticed that Linux and Solaris were
not being consistent about the default monospace font (due to an
apparent oversight in the stock GNOME code, Solaris didn't have one, so
it was defaulting to a Sans font which might not even be monospace for
all I know). Fixing this may make Bill happy with regards to being able
to put two 80-column windows next to each other.
