The gconf library should not simply hang the program when there is a
problem launching the daemon. I believe the problem is that the parent
process needs to close the write side of the pipe used by the daemon
to signal that it has started. I will work on a fix for this soon.
I also noticed that, while certain programs launch version 1 of the
daemon, we have not back-ported the recent GConf2 changes. I will
also work on that...
