I've since been able to get it working, though I'm not sure exactly what
caused that- I think some combination of environment variable settings
like GNOMEDIR and deleting all my local .gnome* directories.
I'm still getting errors like the following in the launch window:
GnomeUI-WARNING **: Could not open help topics file NULL
GNOME Help-DEBUG: CORBA user exception: IDL:omg.org/CosNaming/NamingContext/NotFound:1.0.
but the help system appears to be working.
