Searching for all bugs in the tasklist component turned up numerous reports
(3017, 3332, 3580, 4155, 4529, 5423, 5627, 5648, and many others) that could
be what we're seeing, with the comment that it is a known bug and was fixed in
version 1.2. Downloading the gnome-core 1.2 source and diffing resulted in
output that was too huge and mixed for me to separate out the changes, and at
one point (the first entry) in the ChangeLog something is said about having
rewritten tasklist practically from scratch. Maybe someone else would be more
successful at figuring out what to do next.
If we don't want to find the right patch or take the new tasklist, I wonder if
a workaround would be something like a tasklist-wrapper akin to panel-wrapper
to restart it if it goes away, but that seems like such a hack.
