We've been running stock AFS clients for quite a while (up until this
release, where we have custom-built clients), so I don't think we made
any changes which would have been either local or too recent for
OpenAFS.
It's possible that we simply don't have any comon progras doing byte
range locks, and that you run something (like messages) which does.
