x X and .dircolors

I'm running sipb-install athena, updated to 9.0 on clockwork-frog, a
vaio XG laptop.

The initial terminal (entitled "Terminal") doesn't give me a prompt
until I hit return. When I hit return, I get the message:

[blank line]
x X
dircolors: `/afs/athena.mit.edu/user/b/o/boojum/.dircolors': No such file or directory

This is also true if I start a terminal from the panel (click on
"prompt") or if I start an xterm by typing xterm &.

If I touch .dircolors, I don't get the no such file or directory
message, but I do get the no-prompt-until-I-hit-return and the "x X"
message.

This is true if I log in without customizations, and this is also true
if I move my .Xresources aside (since I think that's the thing that
gets sourced even if I ignore customizations).

My homedir and dotfiles are readable, but I don't see anything with
dircolor, or "x X" in them.

Note that I haven't successfully had an xterm on this machine with
anything other than 9.0, since it has a graphics card that apparently
needs xfree4.0 to make sense of it.
