gnome crash on login in 9.0 beta

On logging into cutter-john, a Dell Optiplex GX110 running bleeding-edge Athena
9.0, I find that the following error window appears:
Application "panel" (process 17252) has crashed
due to a fatal error.
(Segmentation fault)

Probably unrelated to the GNOME issue is the following problem with esd, which
spews to the console window just before the error window pops up:
