Howdy,

I believe you know about this problem happening in general, but I
wanted to include my machine among the list of wounded. I tried to
take the beta of 9.0 yesterday (or was it Tuesday?) on my Sun Ultra
5, slingshot.mit.edu, and after a while it failed and suggested I try
a fsck, which I did, with results along the lines of:

   THE FOLLOWING SECTORS COULD NOT BE READ: 16 17 18 [...] 30 31
   CANNOT READ; BLK 16

Anyway, the machine is now stuck in root login. When I try to exit it says

   ENTER RUN LEVEL (0-6, s or S) [2]:

When I press return, it says:

   INIT: cannot create /var/adm/utmpx

   INIT: SINGLE USER MODE

and I'm stuck back in root login.

Again, not presuming you don't already know all this, but if you
figure out a fix, could you send someone to N42-240F to fix
slingshot.mit.edu -- or send me instructions and I'll do it myself.

Thanks!
