My guess is that Andrew messages is compiled with an older version of
the X library and it crashes when run under xalf.
I meant to discuss this issue in release-team this week, but forgot.
We'll discuss it next week.
I think your only workaround is to turn off xalf integration in gnome.
Run "xalf-capplet" and turn it off in there.
